Help Build a Chicken Farm

Give the Gift of Education

The residents of Dhami Gau, Nuwakot, Nepal, lived a happy and normal rural farm life before the devastating April 2015 earthquake hit.  Fifteen families lived in the village of Dhami Gau, and all of their houses and outbuildings collapsed in the quake. Some families relocated, but most had nowhere else to go.  Realizing their plight, PDF supported the remaining families with relief materials right after the earthquake. PDF also provided temporary shelters, and then supported fifteen victim families by building permanent houses.

Ramji Upaddhya is one farmer who stayed in Dhami Gau. He has a small family with five members--his old widow mother, two children (one son and a daughter), his wife and himself. Now, with a stable home, he and the other families in the village need your help to build this chicken farm co-op.

PDF and Mind the Gap Worldwide would like to support these families through this income generating project. The families will contribute some of the cost so they will feel invested and motivated toward success.

Once this farming co-op is completed, it will become self-sustaining and allow the families to generate a profit. Over time, this will empower families, and lift their economic situation significantly.

Every year, PDF provides very needy students with scholarships toward education. This year they have more qualified applicants than they can support, and have asked Mind the Gap Worldwide to help.  Their model is to encourage and support, but also foster independence.  If we can cover these fees, the students will cover the rest.

Nelson Mandela said, "The power of education extends beyond the development of skills we need for economic success. It can contribute to nation-building and reconciliation."

Investing in education yields significant development benefits.  Education reduces poverty, boosts economic growth and increases income. It increases a person's chances of having a healthy life, reduces maternal deaths, and combats diseases such as HIV and AIDS. Education can promote gender equality, reduce child marriage, and promote peace. In sum, education is one of the most important investments a country can make in its people and its future.*
